Q. Many opine that IoT is just a buzzword that industry Gurus have coined to create hype? Do you agree with that line of thought? Or do you feel that IoT is opening an entirely new market?

A. In today’s time, IoT is much more than a buzzword. It is creating new avenues with the explosion of connected devices. Consumer spending on connected devices is predicted to be over USD 100 Billion by 2025. The number of active IOT devices is expected to grow to 22 Billion by 2025. These facts and figures are more than enough to prove that IoT is not just a buzzword.

Industry 4.0 is transforming manufacturing segment. As the technology landscape is rapidly transforming, there has been a massive growth in connected devices and platforms combined with the abundance of data from field devices which has made it imperative for industrial companies to speedily adapt their products & services and move from the physical world to the digital one.

Q. In your opinion, is the Government of India (GoI) playing any significant role in expanding the IoT market right now? If yes–how?

A. The Government of India is playing a major role in expanding the IoT market. They are investing a significant amount of money on developing skills that encompass IoT capabilities. This spending simply testifies governments plans to embrace the rise of future ready technologies.

The recent Union Budget 2020 is also a good example of the same. The government has proposed to allocate Rs 3,000 crore for skill development around the same. In my view, the Government of India’s belief in IoT is clear from its spending on skill development.

Q. What are your expectations from the GoI in terms of the initiatives they should take to make India an IoT-super power?

A. The Government of India should delve into the application of IoT in its primary industry sectors. Indian aviation sector is the fourth largest civil aviation market in the world and this industry has just begun to use IoT and its applications.

The GOI needs to introduce IoT and its applications in more primary industries. This would not only create a very good example but would also encourage more private players to start making use of IoT solutions.

Q. Are you satisfied with the rate of deployment of IoT solutions in India?

A. The adoption of IoT in India is taking its own time. Numerous industries are slowly and steadily embracing technology such as smart education, smart manufacturing, smart homes, home-automation, etc. The best part about IoT is that it is being adopted in the emerging economies faster than the rest of the markets. Several markets in Asia are also adopting to IoT faster than the rest of the markets.

The global IoT market is expected to reach around USD 740 Billion in the next couple of years.

Q. Which industry segments do you believe will be driving a larger chunk of demand? Why?

A. In the Asia markets, numerous industries like education, industrial, healthcare and entertainment will be driving a larger chunk of IoT adoption. The primary reason includes the capability of IoT as a technology that is being used to connect with customers. IoT in smart cities, smart manufacturing, smart homes, smart education, etc., is being used immensely to engage with customers for delivering immersive experiences.

Q. How do you see your IoT-related business growing in the next 2-3 years both in terms of revenue and as a fraction of your overall revenues?

A. By 2025, as per IDC prediction, there will be 41.6 billion connected IoT devices. It indicates industrial and automotive equipment to be the largest gainers with connected things.
