The 32-bit RA and RX families of microcontrollers from Renesas’ cloud development kits now support Microsoft’s Azure cloud services platform.

Microsoft’s Azure cloud services are supported by Renesas Electronics Corp.’s cellular-to-cloud development kits, which are powered by its RA and RX 32-bit microcontrollers (MCUs). The business’s LTE CAT-M1 module, which wirelessly connects MCUs to cloud services without a gateway, is also included in the Azure-certified cloud development kits. Asset tracking, building automation, medical data management, voice command, and industrial control are important embedded applications.

The CK-RA6M5 and CK-RX65N cloud kits allow for the cloud-based connection and control of wireless IoT devices. They include the brand-new Embedded Wireless Framework from Microsoft, which offers a streamlined connection to the Azure cloud platform and enables any network adapter to safely connect to the cloud.

The devices are approved to connect to Azure IoT Hub as pre-certified kits, and they may be securely provisioned using the Device Provisioning Service. The fact that these devices are IoT Plug and Play certified allows developers to include them into their solutions using pre-defined device models, doing away with the need for manual hardware configuration, according to Renesas.

What’s contained in cloud kits? Six on-board sensors, a high-performance MCU called the RYZ014A Cat-M1 Pmod, and many peripherals, such as a USB FS connector, a USB-to-UART serial converter, two PMOD connectors, and a battery connector are all included.

The security kits offer hardware-based security, including the RA6M5 and RX65N MCUs’ respective Trusted Secure IP (TSIP) driver and Renesas Secure Crypto Engine 9 (SCE9). A software-based IoT cryptography platform that securely connects IoT devices to server-hosted applications on-premises or in the cloud was also developed by Renesas in partnership with Crypto Quantique.

According to Renesas, the dev kits make it simple to gather data from onboard sensors, transfer it to the cloud for processing, use tools, and download the model back to the end point for AI/ML at the edge. The company’s pre-built products, such as Edge Impulse Studio and Reality AI products, significantly streamline development.

The Renesas Quick-Connect IoT Platform, which the cloud kits are a part of, enables developers to connect to more sensors or connectivity choices using the common Pmod interfaces. Additionally, it enables customers to use the Quick-Connect Studio to graphically design software and expand their use-cases. To expedite design, the business also created the Cellular Cloud Connected System, a Winning Combination reference design.
