“A use of old technology in a new way is transforming the potential capabilities of IoT”. Myriad has introduced Thingstream, a new IoT connectivity platform, which sets itself apart in that it uses Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) to deliver machine-to-machine (M2M) communication. To power the IoT in our homes, Recom has launched 3W and 4W AC-DC modules with EN60335 household certification. In the 5G arena, Keysight’s new 5G RF design verification test toolset helps create real-world 5G test scenarios & in-depth analysis.

Global IoT Connectivity Platform Built On USSD Messaging

The Myriad Group software company has launched Thingstream, a new IoT connectivity platform, which sets itself apart in that it uses Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) as a means of delivering machine-to-machine (M2M) communication. USSD is a protocol used by Global system for Mobile Communications (GSM) cellular telephones to communicate with the service provider’s computers. The company says USSD can provide secure IoT connectivity without the internet being involved at all. “To date, a typical solution for asset tracking typically involves cellular data,” said Myriad’s Neil Hamilton. “This by default requires not just a suitable roaming carrier partner who can match the enterprise’s footprint, but also means a device needs to support TCP/IP in order to communicate.” Using the USSD protocol instead of cellular data is how Thingstream avoids these requirements. USSD is a GSM protocol that allows short messages to be exchanged in a two-way, real-time connection while using less power than cellular roaming. Further, since GSM mobile services are readily available around the globe, USSD provides a wide area of coverage for connected IoT devices. Devices can access USSD through Thingstream’s global roaming M2M subscriber identity module (SIM). Read more.

New 3W And 4W Low-Cost AC/DC Converters For Smart Home And IoT

Smart homes and IoT systems require a high number of low power nodes, actuators and sensors to process information intelligently. To efficiently power these applications, the company has launched new low-cost 3W and 4W converters with EN60335 household certification. The RAC03-G and RAC04-G offer high efficiency and a no-load power consumption of only 75mW making them ideal for use in energy-critical systems. The standard 3.3, 5.0, 12, 15 and 24V DC outputs are suitable to power relays, gateways and building automation nodes. A universal input voltage range from 85 to 305V AC allows for worldwide use.
