Certification Makes ThreadX SMP RTOS Ideal Choice For Safety-critical IoT Devices

Real-time operating systems (RTOS) firm Express Logic said that its popular ThreadX SMP RTOS has achieved the highest level of SGS-TÜV Saar certification for embedded development in safety-critical systems using symmetric multicore processing architectures. For the companies using ThreadX SMP, this certification will simplify their certification process, save time and money, and reduce risk, according to Express Logic.

Certification Makes ThreadX SMP Ideal Choice for Applications That Must Meet Stringent Safety Standards

This certification ensures compliance with the industrial safety standard IEC 61508 and all standards derived from it, including IEC 61508 SIL 4, IEC 62304 Class C, ISO 26262 ASIL D, and EN 50128 SW-SIL 4.

“As these standards are used to ensure the functional safety of electrical, electronic, and programmable electronic safety-related medical devices, process control systems, industrial machinery, and railway control systems, compliance with them makes ThreadX SMP ideal for use in the development of safety-critical IoT devices”, the company explained.

Commenting on the anouncement, the company said; “ThreadX SMP is based on Express Logic’s high-performance ThreadX RTOS, a small, highly efficient embedded OS that minimizes system overhead and provides lightning-fast, real-time response. With a memory footprint as small as 10KB and sub-microsecond interrupt response and context switch, ThreadX SMP enhances symmetric multicore architectures from ARM, Intel, NXP, MIPS, and Synopsys while retaining hard real-time responsiveness.”

During the certification process, SGS-TÜV Saar evaluated the relevant parts of Express Logic’s modified waterfall development process for ThreadX SMP, with phase overlap and phase blending, to ensure that best development practices were followed during various phases.

These phases included: Requirements management, design, implementation, verification, and maintenance.

Using an extensive test suite, SGS-TÜV Saar rigorously reviewed all testing and features of ThreadX SMP.

SGS-TÜV Saar is an accredited, independent company for testing, auditing, verifying, and certifying embedded software for safety-related systems.
