Chief Justice of India Sharad Bobde said that there is no plan to use artificial intelligence (AI) in decision-making process in the courts. Former CJI RM Lodha had expressed his concerns about the use of AI.
Justice Lodha had said that the idea is good and may help in management of cases in courts and discharge of judicial functions. He also added that like other technological innovations, use of AI may have potential negative implications. He requested the CJI to carefully weigh all pros and cons before AI is used in judicial decision- making.
Ten lakh words per second
Justice Bobde replied that there is no intention of introducing AI in decision-making itself. The system that is being tried is to be implemented is to have a reading speed of about ten lakh words per second.
He added that the Ayodhya case had thousands of documents. Reading all these documents, as per him, would become, if AI was deployed. However, there is no thought of substituting the judicial decision-making process of human mind as per the CJI.
