The number of cellular internet of things ( IoT) connections will grow to 2.3 billion by 2025 according to a report titled “IoT cellular connections by air interface and industry vertical” by Strategy Analytics. The report also said that 5G connections will grow to a third of all IoT connections by 2025.

As per the report, the market is presently dominated by 2G and 4G with a combined 79 per cent of all connections as of the end of 2019. 5G will grow in dominance throughout the 2020s.The report also said that automotive will be the dominant vertical segment. Industrial and utilities, transportation and security will be the other major markets.

Asia Pacific to dominate

The report also said that Asia Pacific will remain the largest market supported by Chinese IoT growth. Andrew Brown, executive director of enterprise and IoT research at strategy Analytics, said, “From 2020 onwards, the ability to explore new business models resulting from 5G, especially NR (New Radio), with network slicing and low latency, opens up a wealth of new possibilities for the IoT market, especially around QoS (Quality-of-Service), allowing companies to understand their environments in granular detail and in real-time.”
