According to a recent report by Zdnet, Qualcomm has partnered with Microsoft to develop mobile hardware for Microsoft’s Azure Sphere Internet of Things (IoT) operating system.

About the partnership

Roanne Sones, Corporate Vice President at Microsoft told the news daily that the new chipset will work end-to-end with Azure and will focus on bringing together connectivity and security for IoT devices.

The new Azure Sphere chip will enclose hardware-level security and will automatically come preconfigured with Azure Sphere out of the box. The chip will also be able to connect to Azure Sphere security cloud services.

The companies told the news daily that the solution adds to Qualcomm Technologies’ robust hardware-based security to make it easy for manufacturers to create secure solutions, and to keep devices up to date over time with over a decade of security and OS updates created and delivered directly to each device by Microsoft.

Galen Hunt, managing director of Microsoft Azure Sphere stated that the new IoT chipset will light up a broad set of new scenarios at the outer edge — even the most resource-constrained ones.
