Speaking on the growth of technology powered by the Internet in India to the foreign visitors from the global organisation ‘Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers’ (ICANN), Ajay Prakash Sawhney, Secretary, Ministry of Information and Technology (MeitY) said that as compared with the global 3 percent, 7 per cent growth in India might seem like a lot, but not impressive. Anything less than double digits is less satisfactory.
ICANN is a non-profit that maintains the world’s Internet domain names and has announced its partnership with India’s NASSCOM for a new research partnership called Internet Identifier Innovation Center. ICANN is currently working in Ghana and Argentina to place IoT devices on free roaming cattle to prevent them from trampling on farmland.
The way ahead
In India, the above partnership will initiate a project on the Internet of Things (IoT), a technology where Internet-connected sensors in physical devices can send and receive data to and from such devices.
Ajay Prakash Sawhney also added that since it is early times, there is room for growth to cover more than the present 500 million users.
The National Digital Communications Policy of 2018 includes expansion of broadband for all and 4+ million digital communication jobs, thus ensuring digital sovereignty by 2022.
Plans have also been announced to scale up the National Knowledge Network (NKM) that connects 500 districts and 1680 research institutions to a central Internet and data centers.
