What Others Should Learn From The Auto Sector For Patent Filing

  • Several sectors in future are to face an intensified patent filing for the increasing IoT products and solutions.
  • Amidst this chaotic rush, however, the auto sector seems to be perhaps the least affected.

The strengthening of IoT with 5G is set to bring a remarkable transformation in automotive, healthcare, logistics, smart cities, retail, and other sectors.

And this means a big surge in patents due to the convergence of companies operating in different sectors.

With a huge number of such companies competing across different sectors, it is bound to create a disordered environment for them all.

However, companies belonging to the automotive sector seem to be least affected of the lot.

How so?

In order to prevent an IoT automotive device (that is using 5G for sending a lot of data) to infringe upon standard-essential patents owned by a telecom company, an organisation called 5G Automotive Association (5GAA) can play a central role in influencing regulatory and industry bodies for spectrum allocation and certification. 5GAA can also provide approval processes required for the deployment of future connected mobility solutions.

This consortium includes an alliance of auto makers like Audi, BMW, Jaguar Land Rover, Ford and SAIC with network vendors like Huawei, Ericsson, Nokia, Infineon, AT&T, Intel, Samsung, etc.

The road ahead for others

While the auto sector will be fully benefiting from this, other sectors might require some more time to achieve such kind of privilege.

To avoid the so-called “litigation war” from happening, it will be wise for others to soon form similar organisations of their own as well.
