FotoNation introduced an innovative iris recognition solution for VR, AR or MR gear markets, at CES 2018. FotoNation’s IrisXR enables a high level of security for users of headset devices, claiming it has a false acceptance rate of one in 10 million, as well as spoofing detection capabilities. This keeps information transmitted by the users secure. In addition, the company asserts that the solution uses small memory and low power, reducing costs for integrating it into OEM devices.

The solution offers a false acceptance rate of one in 10 million, yet utilises less memory and power.

The solution features FotoNation’s MIRLIN iris recognition technology which is currently deployed in law enforcement and access control applications.

“The IrisXR solution addresses the challenges with head-mounted wearables, such as working at close proximity, handling large occlusions and supporting wider eye gaze angles”, the company asserted.

“The AR, VR and MR markets continue to be a fast-growing segment, as dedicated AR and VR headsets collectively are expected to grow at a very strong pace from just under 10 million units in 2016 to just shy of 100 million units in 2021, with a five-year CAGR of 57.7%1)”, the company noted in the product announcement.

“Being a leader in the mobile space for high-performance imaging solutions, we were able to bring the high level of security featured in mobile device technology into IrisXR,” said Geir Skaaden, executive vice president and chief products and services officer, Xperi Corporation. “We are proud to bring this cutting-edge technology to market and offer a biometric solution that addresses several wearable challenges and is the right technology, not only for security but also for personalizing experiences. We believe iris biometrics in the AR, VR and MR markets will set a new trend for years to come.”

The solution will be available in Q1 2018.
