u-blox’s new modules feature a lightweight and low power PSK management system that is customised as per the needs of IoT applications
u-blox, a global leader in positioning and wireless communication technologies for automotive, industrial and consumer markets, announced the launch of a new series of long-term evolution for machines (LTE-M) and narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) modules.
u-blox’s new SARA-R5 series of LTE-M and NB-IoT modules are designed for low power wide area (LPWA) IoT applications. The new series offers unmatched end-to-end security and long product availability, making it suitable for IoT applications with long-term device deployments.
The latest series of modules is built on the u-blox M8 GNSS receiver chip and the u-blox UBX-R5 cellular chipset. For customers, this means long-term availability, roadmap stability and technical support down to the silicon level. Core technology ownership facilitates new features, relevant for positioning, connectivity, timing and security.
The latest modules also feature a lightweight and low power pre-shared key (PSK) management system that is customised as per the needs of IoT applications, in addition to a comprehensive set of security features.
Commenting on the launch, Andreas Thiel, Head of Product Centers at u‑blox, said, “SARA-R5 sets a new benchmark for IoT connectivity. By integrating a hardware-based Root of Trust in a discrete secure element within the UBX-R5 chipset, we are paving the way for robust secure communication from the chip all the way to the cloud.”
“The secure element is compliant with EAL5+ High common criteria certification, which makes SARA-R5 ideally suited to protect sensitive assets and communications,” Thiel informed.
Thiel further said, “The SARA-R5 is the first module in our portfolio designed to enable value-added services and features that can be remotely activated at any time on already deployed devices. The modules are also u-blox’s first with integrated eSIM capability, offering SIM activation and subscription management options to our customers.”
The new series comes in two product variants. SARA‑R511M, featuring a built-in u-blox M8 GNSS receiver, is designed for mobile applications in automotive, tracking, fleet management and telematics sectors. The other variant, SARA-R510M, is optimised to provide the lowest achievable power consumption, drawing below 1 microampere of current in power save mode, thus making it suitable for metering, connected health, smart city, security and surveillance, remote monitoring and other battery-powered applications.
