India, Sweden Launch Joint Program to Work on Smart Cities, Clean Tech

Under the new programme, the projects to be funded include full-scale R&D projects that will focus on co-development of innovative products

India and Sweden launched a joint programme to bring together world class excellence of the two countries and to work towards addressing the challenges in the field of smart cities and clean technologies as well as digitalisation/Internet of Things (IoT).

The joint programme was funded collectively by Department of Science and Technology (DST) of India and innovative agency of Sweden – Vinnova.

On the Sweden side, funding up to 2,500,000 Swedish Krona (approx Rs 1.87 crore) will be provided by Vinnova as grant to participants from Sweden. On the other hand, a conditional grant of up to 50 per cent per project, with a ceiling of Rs 1.5 crore, will be provided to the partners from India.

Under the new programme, the projects to be funded include full-scale research and development (R&D) projects that will focus on co-development of innovative products, technologies or processes and product adaptation projects.

To find solutions to global challenges

Speaking on the development, Klas Molin, Ambassador of Sweden to India, said, “Moving from idea to innovation requires learning and collaboration. India and Sweden share values – responsibility, sustainability, doing more with less. Our countries can unleash co-innovation and co-creation to find solutions to global challenges.”

The Ambassador further said, “A year ago, we signed the Sweden-India Innovation Partnership. Today we are announcing jointly funded programs. We are looking at deepening cooperation in the areas of smart cities, energy, digitalisation, life sciences as well as developing our start-up communities and allowing start-ups to grow and prosper.”

Molin also emphasised on the ‘triple helix’ model of innovation which involves the participation of industry, government and academia. This model would be useful as all the partners can work towards leveraging new technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) to create solutions that help in meeting sustainable development goals.
