AutoGrid Bags Award for Best Smart Grid Project in India

AutoGrid, a developer of software applications utilising artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), big data and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to enable a smarter distributed energy world, announced that it has bagged the 2019 Innovation Award for Best Industry Smart Grid Project in India.

The company got the award from India Smart Grid Forum (ISGF)’s Innovation Awards, which recognise innovative organisations, industry leaders and groundbreaking projects that have created new milestones in smart cities and smart grids.

AutoGrid is awarded for its demand-side management (DSM) initiative, in association with the Andhra Pradesh government and Andhra Pradesh Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (APSPDCL).

Improve customer experience

The project installed smart grid and IoT-based solutions with the aim to improve utility financial health and consumer experiences. The company jointly worked with the APSPDCL on automated DSM programs that cover various key segments such as commercial/residential air conditioning systems, agricultural pump-sets and industrial non-critical loads.

Reji Kumar Pillai, President of ISGF, said, “AutoGrid’s innovative DSM solutions, deployed across all key consumer segments in their Andhra Pradesh project, illustrate how technology can bring transformational benefits to several sectors of the economy and citizens.”

“This project serves as a model of how utilities across India and in other developing regions can leverage IoT, AI and big data analytics at scale to cut opex and capex, save energy, reduce critical groundwater depletion, enhance agricultural sector efficiency and improve the lives of citizens,” said Pillai.

Cost savings

When deployed at scale, the DSM solutions will help in the benefits of more than Rs. 1000 crore every year (around US$ 150 million) per utility. These savings will be achieved through peak load saving to cut down significant capital expenses and time-of-use implementation to utilise cheap power at off-peak hours. In addition, the savings will be via soil-moisture/water-level sensor-based pump-set operation to smartly cut down water and energy used for agricultural purposes and air conditioning system cycling to push energy efficiency as well as peak load saving. The renewable integration to integrate more cost-effective wind and solar power supply at the project without affecting the quality or reliability of service.
