AI/ML will Play a Vital Role in the Evolution of IoT Solutions

Sagar Raj, co-founder, Shoolin Labs, in an interaction with EFY bureau, talks about technologies shaping IoT future, India’s tech ecosystem, role of open source phenomenon in the IoT arena and a lot more.

Q. In your opinion, which are the top three technologies that are shaping the future of IoT? How are they influencing the future of IoT?

LoRa, Sigfox and narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) are top three technologies that are shaping the future of IoT.

These technologies are influencing the future of IoT by providing light weight significance, along with broad range. Apart from this, these technologies can work on very low power energy.

Q. Between the cellular and NB-IoT/LPWA families of wireless technologies – which one are you betting upon? Why?

I am betting upon NB-IoT/LPWA families of wireless technologies as they consume low power as compared to the cellular ones. NB-IoT supports wide area network and it can connect multiple devices at a time as well as store data. On the other hand, cellular network needs active mobile tower all the time.

Q. How ready is India’s tech eco-system to develop and deploy IoT solutions?

Continuous power supply and connectivity are the major resources required to deploy IoT. In India, almost every city, town and village are equipped with the Internet connectivity and power supply. In addition, we have alternate sources of power like solar, which is available at affordable rate. The government is also working on expanding internet connectivity via wi-fi hotspot and deployment of 4G towers.

India’s tech ecosystem is now ready to develop IoT solutions. Microcontrollers and development boards of industrial grade are now available in the country at affordable rates. The only thing we need to focus upon is the specific application and proper design. Development boards like NodeMCU (ESP8266) and Jetson board of Nvidia for high processing are providing support for the development of IoT hardware and software platform.

Q. Do you foresee India’s tech industry developing its own IP and branded products/solutions in the IoT arena?

Yes, India’s tech industry is capable of developing its own IP and branded products/solutions in the IoT arena.

Q. Do you see the Open Source phenomenon play an important role in the IoT arena?

Open source phenomenon can play an important role in the IoT arena. There are many industrial grade development boards such as Raspberry Pi and NodeMCU (ESP8266), which help in product prototyping for IoT-based products. On software side, there is integrated development environment (IDE) software to write code in a proper way. In addition, there is cloud platform to implement IoT solutions.

Q. How do you see the role, technologies like AI/ML will play in the evolution of IoT solutions?

Technologies like AI/ML will play a vital role in the evolution of IoT solutions. The implementation of AI/ML algorithm would help in faster analysis and enable the system to take proper decision to do action. These technologies will help in all domains and sectors like medical, manufacturing, security, agriculture, etc.

With regards to security, real data could be monitored via IoT if AI/ML is implemented. As these technologies could predict and alert, connected machines will able to take decision as well as solve the problem.

Q. What’s your opinion on the state of security available for IoT solutions? How do you see the evolution from here on w.r.t threats and countermeasures?

According to Cisco’s annual Visual Networking Index, machine-to-machine (M2M) connections will account for more than half of the world’s 28.5 billion connected devices by 2022.

IoT is all about connectivity. A network can be hacked, and fake signals can create confusion. Meanwhile, engineers are talking about personal IP address for device connectivity. I suggest, they should use encrypted and decrypted method while transferring and receiving a data. To minimise and solve issues, ML security algorithm could be used.

Q. What are the key technologies missing, which when made available, will accelerate the adoption of IoT across the globe?

A proper framework and channel to monitor IoT devices.
