Nordic has bundled a globally-usable iBASIS eSIM with 10 MB of free initial data into all its nRF9160 Development Kits
Nordic Semiconductor, a fabless semiconductor company specialises in ultra-low power performance wireless system on a chip and connectivity devices, announced that it has entered into a partnership with iBASIS – one of the world’s biggest international cellular carriers in voice, data and Internet of Things (IoT) services. The aim of the partnership is to make global LTE-M and narrowband (NB)-IoT cellular IoT connectivity simple, automatic and instant, when using nRF9160 System-in-Package (SiP) module.
In order to achieve this, Nordic has bundled a globally-usable iBASIS eSIM with 10 MB of free initial data into all its nRF9160 Development Kits. The customers of Nordic nRF9160 cellular IoT have to simply register their eSIM on its nRF Connect for Cloud website to smoothly connect to the ‘Global Access for Things’ network of iBASIS and gain access to a complete range of configurations, connectivity and monitoring services.
Due to this, Nordic’s nRF9160 cellular IoT customers can get immediate high-quality global connectivity without going through the process of negotiating and managing several relationships with individual local cellular carriers around the globe.
Using the eSIM technology, the customers can leverage iBASIS as a single global connectivity supplier, with a single ‘operations’ on-line dashboard, a single contract and a single monthly bill that breaks down all services used globally.
Reducing complexity for customers

Making cellular IoT easy
Geir Langeland, Nordic Semiconductor’s Director of Sales & Marketing, said, “We designed the nRF91 Series from the outset to make cellular IoT easy and applicable to any application that would benefit from a cellular connection. An eSIM is a remotely, over-the-air programmable SIM that can hold multiple sets of local network operator credentials as compared to a traditional SIM card that can only hold one set of operator credentials. The iBASIS eSIM is in line with all the relevant standards of GSM Association (GSMA) and is soldered onto the nRF9160 SiP module.
The nRF9160 SiP is significantly smaller, lower power, and has more security features as compared to any other cellular IoT module for LTE-M and NB-IoT applications. The nRF9160 SiP is available from major international electronics distributors such as Mouser Electronics, Digi-Key Electronics and Premier Farnell, among others.
