Utilising the benefits of 5G, key use cases of new 5G SIM would include massive IoT applications, enhanced mobile broadband and critical communication infrastructure
Gemalto, the world’s largest manufacturer of SIM cards has announced the first 5G SIM, which is designed to meet the new generation of network deployments that will emerge in 2019. The new 5G SIM is in compliance with the latest ETSI 3GPP specifications and SIM alliance recommendations.
It not only brings enhanced data privacy and seamless 5G global roaming imposed by the latest standards, but it is also the first to add improved protection against the hacking to anticipate future needs.
Emmanuel Unguran, EVP Mobile Services & IoT Business Unit, Gemalto commented that the 5G SIM provides the foundation of trust in this next generation mobile network for operators and other stakeholders in the ecosystem. It will help operators unleash the full 5G potential, maximise their network investments, and simplify new service deployment with full backward compatibility to previous 3G/4G technology.
Gemalto has been closely working with major 5G industry stakeholders worldwide in the development of 5G SIM, through standardisation, prototyping and testing.
Gemalto’s 5G SIM will be available in all SIM form factors such as removable SIM, eSIM, M2M SIM, etc. The latest SIM includes full anonymisation of end-to-end subscriber identities, due to on-board identity encryption. In addition, the new 5G SIM eliminates the potential to misuse such information to locate and trace individuals or collect personal data and ensures mobile operators to comply with regulations such as General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
The trusted environment resilience will also help the operators to secure the complete SIM life cycle, removing exposure to hacking and accidental breaches.
